ISRACTION DAY BRINGS OUT SHOPPERS FOR ISRAEL
For Immediate Release
ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016, STANDWITHUS CANADA JOINED IsrACTION DAY, the worldwide effort to fight BDS, Buy Israeli Goods, and share with those less fortunate.
This was the first year that StandWithUs Canada joined the StandWithUs international grassroots campaign that began three years ago, where people buy Israeli goods in local supermarkets and donate the purchases to people in need in the community.
In partnership with ICEJ (International Christian Embassy Jerusalem) Canada, and the humanitarian organization, Ve’ahavta, we shopped with the spirit of tikkun olam!
“It’s a mitzvah wrapped in a mitzvah”, said Meryle Kates, Director of StandWithUs Canada. “We supported Israel when we bought the products, and were so happy we could do something as a team effort to help people in our community.”
It was a fun shopping experience as we were B.I.G. (Buying Israeli Goods) and our campus and high school team, family and friends, plus Donna Holbrook, Director of ICEJ, took pictures and video as they shopped to share globally on our Facebook and Instagram pages. With collection points in Toronto and Thornhill, we found lots of Israeli foods to donate to Ve’ahavta for people who are homeless in our community. A total of 28 shopping bags!
Karen Goldenberg, C.M., Interim CEO of Ve’ahavta, picked up all the shopping bags this morning, and said, “We are honoured to support this important initiative and are proud to distribute the food on our Mobile Jewish Response to Homelessness (MJRH) van and others who are in need.”
StandWithUs Canada’s Campus Coordinator, Zina Rakhamilova, shopped with our Emerson Fellows and student leaders, “We shopped for Israeli goods, donated to people who are homeless and boosted the Israeli economy, while we fought BDS!”
We look forward to IsrAction Day becoming an annual event for StandWithUs Canada and thank our partners, Ve’ahavta and ICEJ, and all of our shoppers for supporting this very worthwhile project with us!
