At this time last year, an estimated 10,400 people were facing homelessness across the GTA.
Today, that number has soared to over 12,000.
That’s 12,000 people, our neighbours, who do not have a place to call home – a place to feel safe, to keep personal belongings, and to be protected from the harsh elements of the outside world.
It’s frustrating how complex a problem this has become. It’s about surging housing and food costs. It’s about being a country that welcomes people in but doesn’t have a plan to support them once they arrive. It’s about people who are ready to work but lack the resources to secure the right job.
Because of you, Ve’ahavta can continue to keep pace with the needs of Toronto’s unhoused population. Last year, you ensured people facing homelessness in our city received 73,719 hot, nutritious meals; 92,964 pieces of weather-appropriate clothing and hygiene supplies; 686 sleeping bags and blankets; and 6,315 harm reduction kits.
And although this is something to feel good about – we certainly do and you should, too – the rising numbers mean there is more to be done.
That’s why I am inviting you to join us at Coldest Night of the Year on Saturday, Feb 22nd.
Rally together as a community with our partners at Beth Tzedec Congregation, Holy Blossom Temple, and Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, to raise awareness and funds so that we can continue to deliver critical supplies to people facing homelessness.
Come out and walk. Donate. Volunteer. Spread the word. Do what you can to help our city’s most vulnerable people make it to Spring.
Cari Kozierok,
CEO, Ve’ahavta
