Learn More About Communities at Risk

What is intersectionality?

Before we learn about the different factors that impact marginalized communities, it’s important to define intersectionality.

Intersectionality means that people have multiple identities which overlap with each other, and which contribute to how that person experiences discrimination in their lives. Intersectionality is important because while many people may experience discrimination due to their gender, race, sexual identity, level of physical ability, religion, or other reasons, some people experience much stronger discrimination because of how their identities differ in multiple categories.
